I want to number equations including the chapter number, but I also want to be able to include a 3rd level of numbering for example when an equation has two or more branches :. I know how to set 2 level numbering and I know how to set 3 level numbering. However I don’t know how to combine them in one setting, so that the 3rd level is optional.

You will note that I used EquationAlpha2 for the first lot of a, b, c numbers and EquationAlpha4 for the second lot so that the sequence would start from a again. Was this reply helpful? Also, I want to be able to create a table of all the equations, like when I do list of Figures, or Tables etc.

Unfortunately, due to the requirement to unlink some of the fields, the captions will not be completely dynamic and you may need to edit the numbers that result from the unlinking of those fields.

Ok, but your workaround is still better that the two options that I currently have: either do the work with only two level numbering, without using the optional 3 level a,b,c etc or having to do all the work manually without any sort of automation and type the numbering.
